Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable Members Present 'Eliminating Hepatitis: A Call to Action' to CongressFirst-Ever National Strategic Plan to Eliminate Viral Hepatitis in the U.S. PublishedWASHINGTON, D.C. – May 16, 2006 – The National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR) officially presented to Congress the first-ever national strategic plan to eliminate viral hepatitis in the U.S., titled “Eliminating Hepatitis: A Call to Action”, on May 10, 2006, in Washington, D.C. On behalf of the more than 100 member organizations of the NVHR, Ms. Molli Conti, NVHR Chair, thanked U.S. Congressmen Charles Dent (R-PA), Mike Honda (D-CA), Heather Wilson (R-NM), and Ed Towns (D-NY) for their support and presented each with a copy of the new national strategic plan on the steps of the Capitol. “Raising awareness about hepatitis is absolutely critical to the health of this nation,” said Congressman Dent. “Great work has been done by our federal health agencies to combat hepatitis, but we still need to push, and push hard for adequate funding because Americans are perishing from this disease,” said Congressman Honda. “Hepatitis is an enormous problem, and anything to help draw attention to this important problem is vital to the health of all Americans,” said Congressman Wilson. The National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable has spent more than two years developing and debating the best way to prevent unnecessary suffering and death caused by viral hepatitis. And now, with a strategic plan in place, the NVHR believes that with the strengths and successes of its collective membership and the country's existing healthcare system, viral hepatitis can indeed be eliminated.
